Before and Aftercare Tips for Dermal Filler Treatments
Dermal fillers are a highly effective way to restore facial volume, enhance features, and achieve a refreshed, youthful appearance without surgery. However, for best results and a smooth recovery, proper care before and after your treatment is essential.
At Aesthetics by Sam Clinic, we want all our clients in Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge to feel confident and well-prepared for their dermal filler appointments. In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know about preparing for your treatment and taking care of your skin afterward.
Before Your Dermal Filler Appointment
1. Avoid Blood Thinners
About 3–5 days before your appointment, avoid substances that can increase the risk of bruising or bleeding. These include:
- Aspirin
- Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)
- Vitamin E
- Fish oil
- Alcohol
- Green tea and herbal supplements
Always consult with your physician if you’re taking any medication regularly.
2. Stay Hydrated
Hydration helps improve skin health and elasticity, making it easier for the filler to integrate naturally.
3. Avoid Dental Work
Try to schedule any dental procedures at least two weeks before or after your filler treatment, especially if you’re receiving injections around the mouth or jawline. Dental work can increase the risk of irritation or infection in treated areas.
4. Arrive with a Clean Face
Avoid wearing makeup on the day of your appointment. Clean, makeup-free skin helps reduce the risk of infection.
5. Plan Ahead
Although downtime is minimal, some swelling or bruising may occur. If you have an upcoming event or photoshoot, schedule your treatment at least 1 to 2 weeks in advance.
Aftercare Tips for Dermal Fillers
1. Avoid Touching the Area
For the first 24 hours, avoid touching or massaging the treated areas unless instructed by your provider. This allows the filler to settle properly.
2. Skip Intense Exercise
Avoid strenuous physical activity, heavy lifting, or hot environments (like saunas or hot yoga) for 24 to 48 hours after your treatment. These can increase blood flow and contribute to swelling or bruising.
3. Minimize Swelling and Bruising
To reduce swelling and bruising:
- Apply a cold compress gently to the area
- Sleep with your head slightly elevated for the first night
- Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours
Any bruising or swelling should subside within a few days.
4. Stay Hydrated and Use SPF
Drink plenty of water and protect your skin with SPF. Hyaluronic acid-based fillers love hydration, and sun protection helps preserve your skin and the longevity of your results.
5. Be Patient with Results
While some results are visible immediately, final results develop over the next 7–14 days as swelling subsides and the filler settles.
6. Avoid Facials and Skin Treatments
Do not schedule facial massages, microneedling, or chemical peels for at least two weeks post-treatment, especially in areas where fillers have been injected.
When to Contact Your Provider
While dermal filler treatments are generally very safe, you should contact your provider if you experience:
- Severe pain or redness
- Unusual or prolonged swelling
- Lumps or asymmetry that doesn’t resolve
- Skin discoloration or coolness to the touch
At Aesthetics by Sam Clinic, your safety is our priority. We’re here to guide you through every step of your treatment and aftercare.
